Saint Joachim looks on as Saint Anna rests on her touch and takes refreshments from her handmaids, after the birth of the Holy Virgin Mary. Midwives prepare to bathe the newborn child. The newborn Mary appears again in the lower righthand corner of the icon, resting in her cradle&mdas;an example of a traditional device in Byzantine iconography, where the same person can be shown more than once in one icon scene.
