Born into a wealthy family in sixth century Rome, Saint Gregory was an excellent student and eventually followed in his father's footsteps as the prefect of Rome. Upon his father's death, he converted the family villa into a monastery and lived a strict monastic life. Elevated to the papacy by popular acclaim in 590, Saint Gregory urged his clergy to the mission of service to the poor. He, himself, required that there always be a dozen of the poor at his meals. He established what is known as "plain chant," or Gregorian chant, which is the oldest known style of liturgical chant in the Western Church.
