One of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, Saint Bartholomew appears in the Gospels under the name of Nathanael. After the Ascension, he travelled to India as a missionary, leaving behind a copy of the Gospel of Matthew, which is, to this day, the most treasured of the four Gospels among Indian Christians. His apostolic endeavors took him to Ethiopia, Mesopotamia, and Armenia. This St. Bartholomew Icon depicts the man who converted the king of Armenia to Christianity, but the king's brother had the saint flayed alive and crucified head downwards. He and Saint Jude are considered the patron saints of Armenia.
